Views from Edinburgh Castle

	Western Approach 800 x 569 174K	That giant car park is now Festival Square and the adjacent shiny new financial district. There's a more complete edit of this negative - 1024 x 680 and 253K in size, showing more foreground and more of the Caledonian Hotel. Compare this image from the late 1970s with the one below which I took in 2003.
	Western Approach 1 1152 x 864 317K	At the bottom right of the picture the railway line from Waverley Station bisects St Cuthbert's Church Grounds before entering the tunnel west to Haymarket. The Castle Terrace car park overlooks King's Stables Road. To the left of the red sandstone Caledonian Hotel is the financial district. St Mary's Cathedral and Corstorphine Hill are in the distance on the right.
	Western Approach Murrayfield 1152 x 864 282K	The pedestrian bridge in the foreground connects both sides of the new financial district over the Western Approach Road. The older buildings at the bottom of the picture are on Lothian Road, part of the A702 road south from Princes Street. At the top left corner can be seen the main railway line leading west past Murrayfield Rugby Ground.
	Western Approach 7 1152 x 864 211K	Behind the substantial metal footbridge are some trannies -- no, not transvestites but colourful transformers in fetching shades of cyan, magenta, blue and pale beige and grey. It's as if they're saying that they're proud of their presence and function.
	West End 767 x 768 149K	The West End of Princes Street as seen from Edinburgh Castle. The Caley Hotel is just visible on the left, as is Corstorphine Hill at top left. Behind St John's church in the foreground is Binn's store, and in the distance behind are the twin Gothic spires of Daniel Stewart's College.
	Forth Bridges 00 1152 x 864 257K	The green dome is West Register House on Charlotte Square. The sun picks out the terraced houses lining Belgrave Crescent on the other side of the Water of Leith's valley. The tops of the Forth road and rail bridges can be seen in the distance on the left. Beyond the waters of the Firth of Forth can be seen the hazy outline of the Ochils.

	Princes Street 794 x 604 109K	A scanned print of another fish-eye lens photo. A red filter shows the clouds to advantage.

	Botanic Gardens 1152 x 864 342K	Looking north from the castle over the rooves of Princes Street and George Street. The ground drops down over the New Town (built on a series of ancient beaches) towards Canonmills and Stockbridge. The wooded area beyond is the Royal Botanic Garden. The (mostly) red-tiled roof belongs to Debenham's store.
	Leith 1152 x 864 281K	Looking across Leith to the Firth of Forth and Fife. A line of cranes extends along the waterfront.
	Calton Hill 1152 x 864 317K	The Balmoral Hotel is on the left behind Waverley Station, over the top of which passes North Bridge. Red metal work supports the shell of the old GPO building. On Calton Hill can be seen the City Observatory, The National Monument and Nelson's Monument.
	Scottish Widows 1024 x 768 163K	The insurance company's building in Morrison Street contrasts with the castle rock. Photographed from Edinburgh Castle's Esplanade.
	Arthur's Seat 1024 x 768 121K	This photo and the next are taken from the same vantage point as the one above. The dome of Edinburgh University's Old College is on the left, in front of Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat.
	Marchmont Road 1152 x 864 267K	A reasonably good picture of Marchmont Road as seen from Edinburgh Castle's Half Moon Battery on a dull day. The flat light tends to make the flattened perspective of a long lens seem almost isometric. The bungalows at the back are on Blackford Hill near Observatory Road, 1.7Km from the foreground of Warrender Park Terrace.
	Marchmont Wind Farm 1654 x 768 289K	A glimpse of Bruntsfield Links can be seen over the trees of The Meadows. Warrender Park Terrace is the street running off to the right. The camera is looking directly up Spottiswoode Street. The radio mast on Blackford Hill is 1.5 kilometres further south. In the far distance are the Moorfoot Hills with at least half a dozen wind-turbines visible on the horizon.
	Spottiswoode Street 1152 x 864 286K	Spottiswoode Street leads away from Bruntsfield Links towards Thirlestane Road and Warrender Baths. The backdrop of gorse bushes and trees is provided by Blackford Hill.
	Barclay Church T Woods 1152 x 864 270K	This south view from the castle shows Tollcross, Bruntsfield, Braid and Swanston areas. The green copper dome in the foreground is the Point Hotel. Barclay Church dominates the left of the picture, with the Kings Theatre in front of it covered in scaffolding for renovations. Bruntsfield Links is amongst the trees; the T woods and the ski slope are on the Pentland Hills.
	Howden Glen 1024 x 768 142K	Howden Glen in the Pentland Hills is in the distance. The spire of Barclay Church dominates the left side of the picture, with Oxgangs visible behind.
	Tollcross Bruntsfield 1152 x 864 360K	Looking down part of High Riggs onto the Tollcross road junction. New Uberior House is the metal and glass building on the right, behind which is Earl Grey Street. Home Street curves to the left, changing its name to Leven Street, Gillespie Place and Barclay Place before becoming Bruntsfield Place (next to the trees at the top left of the picture).
	Tollcross 2004 1152 x 864 252K	The Tollcross junction, looking down High Riggs into Home Street. The bus stop at the Cameo Cinema has been recently reintroduced. A yellow concrete block supports the current bus stop notice. Photographed from Edinburgh Castle.
