The lake is vast and there's plenty room for the millionaires to sail their yachts on. The shadows of the buildings are pointing directly east in this photograph. Taken from the top of the Hancock Building with a 17mm ultra-wide lens on my old 35mm Yashica SLR

Detail of the Corncob buildings in Chicago. In a TV programme, an ex-pat British architect explained how she could land here by boat in the Chicago River, or drive right into the building.

All needs are catered for on different levels of the towers so residents could, if they wanted, stay permanently in the building.

The Hancock Building, named after John Hancock. As with the Sears Tower, this building has a public gallery at the top, served by an express elevator. The ultra-wide lens makes it possible to stand across the street and capture the entire building from street level to the top.

The Loop is the electric train system which offers safe public transport through what's been called the worst urban ghetto in the western world, as well as the rich city and affluent outer 'burbs. This was a rainy day as seen from the front of the train.

A couple of hundred miles north of Chicago in Door County, Wisconsin.

A close-up of one of the trees in the previous photo. Some of the tree roots seem to snake in and out of the rocks as they head towards the lake.
