A red double decker tour bus passes by on Lauriston Place at the end of this lane on the western boundary of George Heriot's school. The yellow line is redundant now because both ends of the lane are blocked for cars.

A little further north in the same street is this old doorway in the Telfer Wall.

Little has changed here since I first photographed The Vennel in 1977, 28 years previously. If you compare the two photos you'll see that the shop on the left of the steps has a different style of lettering but the same name. Also the red sandstone building doesn't have the Edinburgh College of Art sign in the earlier picture.

Taken from a slightly higher viewpoint, zoomed in a little for a closer view. More people are evident in this second picture.

The next few black & white shots were taken in the '70s. This close has been rebuilt and looks nothing like this any more.

A similar view to the previous picture but with the camera moved to the right and turned vertical to show the structure supporting the seats for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade above.

Further up towards Johnston Terrace and around the corner, looking down towards the Grassmarket.

A horizontal version of the above picture. The Art College can be seen in the distance.

Looking west along the Cowgate, under South Bridge. Bannermans is on the right, at the bottom of Niddry Street. The High Street and Royal Mile are at the top of Niddry Street.

Photo taken from the bottom of Niddry Street. Niddry Street South is the cul-de-sac on the left and a corner of South Bridge is on the right. The proprietors of the pub have obviously made some play of the name of the main street and incorporated a cow (in two halves) into the ornamentation of the building.

The Underbelly was the name of an entertainment venue which lurked here under one of George IV Bridge's numerous (mostly-hidden) arches during the 2006 Edinburgh Festival. The little bridge at top left connects Central Library's main entrance to the footpath on George IV Bridge.

This is the west side of South Bridge as seen from the Cowgate. Little has changed since the buildings were demolished after the big fire in December 2002. Photographed July 2005.

On the newly-appeared notice board we read that an organisation whose innovative name implies New Energy (cold fusion perhaps?) is sponsored by Aisling Developments Ltd and Universal Fibreoptics UFO. Rather intriguing...

After four and a half years this sad site is still vacant. The notices change periodically and the rubbish has been rearranged into a bonfire shaped work of art... or maybe it's just going to be a bonfire. The current notice admonishes us that we're not looking hard enough.

A few paces down from the Royal Mile are these doorways which caught my eye. The peeling paint has partly revealed an old advertisement for snuff and pipes. Dunno what the green grafitti means, maybe it's telling us we owe a debt to Outlook Express...

From the corner of Gullan's Close is this view across Holyrood Road (continuation of The Cowgate) towards the foot of The Pleasance. Number 14 across the road used to be the Apple Centre, since relocated 450m to the south.

A closer look at the tall building in the previous picture.

The Grassmarket, like much of Edinburgh this year, is undergoing drastic change. The red and white barrier seen here is present on many major roads in the city.
![]() |
At the east end of the Grassmarket the Cowgate continues under George IV Bridge, and Candlemaker Row leads up to the right to Greyfriars Kirkyard. Budget Backpackers can also be seen in the next picture (facing the other way).

Looking back towards a misty Grassmarket.

The Cowgate leads under George IV Bridge towards Holyrood. A bus passes overhead, going towards the top of The Mound then down to Princes Street.
![]() |
The land remains vacant after the big fire but the mud gets rearranged occasionally and new graffiti appears from time to time.

The junction of the Grassmarket and King's Stables Road, featuring some Scottish Baronial style architecture. The premises below have been occupied by Sound Control but their website states they're under administration now.
