Sad to say, this building has been demolished. I took these photographs
in April 2006 but when I passed this way in September it was gone. The
Co-op building has virtually all gone too - only the front fascia has been
preserved opposite the old Mecca bingo (former Palais de Danse). |
When I took these photos I didn't suspect that this was going to be demolished. |
This shows the rear and west side of the Co-op building as well. Only
the south frontage remains now in September 2006. Photographed from the
lane leading off Gardner's Crescent. |
I would have thought that this edifice would have been preserved due
to the paucity of old brick buildings in Edinburgh. Less attractive structures
have been given 'listed building' status. |
The final picture. This area has changed a great deal since the '60s.
The brewery is next for demolition and redevelopment. There used to be
Alexander's garage and car showroom. Freer Street disappeared altogether.
I remember a hairdresser's called Phil's where a haircut cost 2/6 (2 shillings
and sixpence). |

How the area looks in September 2006. Gardner's Crescent leads off to
the left of the roundabout in the foreground. The shell of the Co-op building
is supported by scaffolding. Somewhere behind stood the brick building,
now just a memory. |

The corner of Viewforth and Fountainbridge. Near this spot there used
to be a brewery bridge over the main road. There was a large digital clock
on this which also showed the temperature. |
The bridge referred to above would have been visible in this picture
facing east towards the city centre. |
Further east along the road. Shiny new buildings are already here at
the terminus of the Union Canal. On the extreme left the white-painted
frontage of the old Palais de Danse / bingo club can be seen. |
