Before
800 x 600

I only took this photo of St Stephen's
Place for personal nostalgic reasons but it looked a bit grotty so
I've removed the yellow lines and the bags of rubbish using the clone
tool in Photoshop. |

After
800 x 600
117K |
I used Adobe Image Ready to combine
both versions into an animated .gif but it's 664K in size even when
optimised with only 128 colours. Some of my boyhood chums and I used
to play 'tig' here after a session at the Heart of Midlothian Amateur
Swimming Club on Monday evenings in the '50s. |

Edinburgh boasts several shops selling antique lamps both electric and oil. Mr Purves specialises in oil lamps at the shop in Saint Stephen Street. |

If you come from Princes Street towards Stockbridge you'll likely travel down Frederick Street, Queen Street Gardens West and Howe Street - and the imposing building of St Stephen's Church will dominate the view. This is the stonework just to the left of the front door, photographed in June 2005. |

This is the side view of the stone scrolls in the previous picture. The sunlight highlights the details of the cinquefoil stone roses. |

Further west along St Stephen's Street they're having their market on a June Saturday morning. Music comes from a band playing in The Antiquary as locals and visitors search for bargains. |

A sunnier, more detailed picture of the stone archway featured earlier on this page. Carved into the stone is 'Stockbridge market - butcher meat, fruits, fish & poultry' (my punctuation).
This lane leads northwest from Saint Stephen's Street into Hamilton Place beside the Water of Leith (the river from the Pentland Hills to Leith). |

From the corner of St Stephen's Street and North West Circus Place is this view back towards the market. With The Antiquary at one end, and The Bailie (pictured here) at the other, there's no shortage of cosy places to slake your thirst or have something to eat.
St Stephen's Street has for many years had a sort of Bohemian atmosphere, the sort of place where artists and intellectuals might hang out. |

Scotland

The north entrance to the disused tunnel
leading to Waverley Station. This is in the Scotland Yard children's
playground near Scotland Street. Photo taken on my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 900 with 1.2 Megapixels. |

Warriston

193K |
Perhaps one day the authorities will
dig up all the remains of those buried in Warriston Cemetery and sell
off the land for housing. I first took photographs here in the mid
'70s but this is the first (recent) picture on this website. |

Dean
Village 3

Included here for historical reasons
because the overgrown site to the left of the footbridge has long
since been built on. The children are my son and daughter as they
were in the late '70s. |

Dean Bridge 2

Photographed from the north end, looking back over towards Randolph Cliff on the other side of the gorge of the Water of Leith. |

Randolph Crescent

The Water of Leith is down below on the right, overlooked by the rear of Randolph Crescent. The tenement houses to the left are Great Stuart Street. The gardens in the foreground are private - but the Water of Leith Walkway on the other side provides a pleasant walk from Dean Village to Stockbridge. |

St Bernard's Well

Looking down to this monument, nestling in the trees. Chancelot Flourmill and Inchkeith Island can be seen in the distance. The walkway passes close by the well. This website provides information, thanks to JK Gillon. |
