Demolition continues. Brick dust coats New Street and for the first time for many years it's possible to see the train tunnels from here.

Zooming in for a closer look at the tunnels passing under Regent Road. From this viewpoint it's not obvious that Calton Road separates this former bus garage from the tunnels.

A more permanent building lies beyond, the old Royal High School building on Regent Road.

For those drivers who must bring their cars into the centre of town, there is still parking available off New Street. A lane leads through the new building on the other side of the road into the Waverley Station carpark.

This machine was sorting the rubble into piles as I watched, separating metal girders and timber from masonry.

Further down the hill towards Calton Road these wooden panels are adorned with cow designs, described here in the accompanying 3D text. The face at the top right is intriguing; I don't know if it represents anyone in particular. A distant figure stands at the railings up on Regent Road, looking at the view.

In this view looking back up the hill towards the Canongate, the cow designs in front of the brick wall can be seen. A black cab heads down to Calton Road.

These girders support the floor above (as seen in New Street 29). The vertical ones don't look strong enough to support the additional weight of vehicles.

A last look up the road from under the railway line. If you turn around and cross Calton Road, Jacob's Ladder leads up steps to Regent Road, from where the next pictures were taken.

Comparison with Calton Road 33 taken on 5th May reveals the pace of demolition. This picture taken on 24th July '06.

Zooming in reveals two workmen standing beside some grafitti, the digger machine surrounded by rubble, and a couple walking round the corner from East Market Street into New Street.

The next 6 photos were taken a couple of weeks later. This wide view was taken from Regent Road. The stone walls in the left foreground conceal the steps known as Jacob's Ladder which lead down to Calton Road, opposite the foot of New Street. Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat are on the left horizon. The Canongate leads up the slope to the right, past the top of New Street. The dome is Edinburgh University Old College.

5 archaeologists study the long-buried remains of previous lives and times. If there's anything worth preserving, hopefully it could be incorporated into a feature of the forthcoming project, for example: a sunken courtyard with seats overlooking. In the background, piles of rubble have been neatly graded and sorted for removal.

A few metres to the west the diggers are still moving the big rubble and a workman is spraying water from a hosepipe (no ban here) to damp down the dust and keep it from being blown onto nearby homes.

A monochrome study of the granite setts which still surface many of Edinburgh's remaining cobbled streets. The inscription EWW on the metal covers may stand for Edinburgh Water Works. The Canongate (part of the Royal Mile) as at the top of the hill.

There are other pictures of Jeffrey Street in other parts of this site because it can be seen from other places (try searching for jeffrey using the Google search on the home page). In this photo we're looking up at the curved part of Jeffrey Street from the corner of Cranston Street and East Market Street.

Lorries have been removing material from this site for a few weeks now but this one seems to be bringing supplies associated with the preservation of the archaeologists' discoveries. The covered hole in the foreground is over the old ground floor parking area accessible from Calton Road.
