Major redevelopment is under way at the site bounded by East Market Street, New Street, Waverley Station and the main railway line south. This is the view from near the top of New Street on the 22nd of March 2005. North Bridge is in the distance, 320m away.

Further down New Street is this view up a temporary access road leading to the car park at the east side of the train station.

A look back at New Street from the (presumed) temporary road. All of this is changing.

Looking up at the back of Old St Andrew's House from recently excavated ground next to the railway line.

This whole area seems honeycombed with arched tunnels. This one looks like it leads into Waverley Station near where the Dungeons are located at the corner of Market Street and Waverley Bridge.

The same view from further up the hill. When I revisited in July '05 this road no longer existed. |

The Edinburgh Dungeon's van stands out amongst the commuters' cars.

A closer look at the bizarre decoration on this van. East Market Street is behind, with Jeffrey Street beyond and higher up on the arches. You can have a closer look at the arches in Royal Mile page 6
| The last time I was here there was lots of graffiti on the stonework. | ||
| In the concrete canyon to the south of Regent Bridge is The Venue and this large advert for Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas. | ||
| Currently closed to traffic. Little has changed since I first photographed Regent Bridge. The pedestrian bridge across Leith Street can just be seen in the distance. | ||

A couple more pictures of this site, taken a few weeks later. North Bridge, the Scott Monument and the Balmoral Hotel are in the background.

Edinburgh is known to have hidden layers. What have they found at the bottom of this pit..?

If you compare this shot to East Market St 16 (2nd from top of this page) you'll notice the absence of the carpark access road beside the white portacabins. This long shot was taken from the steps leading up to Regent Road from the bottom of New Street. The steep path is called Jacob's Ladder.

Looking from Jacob's Ladder over the rear of the brick building on the east side of New Street. (See New Street 10, 3rd from top of this page.) This former bus garage is now a carpark - but not for much longer. The sloping rooves cover the main parking area. The three-storey brick part was once offices, later night-clubs.

The main railway line south from Edinburgh passes below and disappears into a tunnel hidden from view in the bottom left hand corner of this picture. A train to London would actually be traveling due east here. Beyond the train tracks, the East Market St site can be glimpsed between the railings.

Up on Regent Road - the part of the A1 which connects Waterloo Place at the east end of Princes Street to London Road at Abbeyhill. The A1 used to be called The Great North Road. Old St Andrew's House is nearby, perched on the cliff-edge overlooking what's being called the Waverley Valley, and the old Royal High School is across the road.

This picture from the Nelson Monument shows, behind Old St Andrew House, how the Waverley valley used to look before the flurry of building work in 2005. The flat carpark pictured here conceals tunnels galore.
| I have reservations about the use of such large advertisements on the sides of buildings in Edinburgh city centre. Phrases such as 'World Heritage Site' are bandied about - but I suppose money doesn't talk; it swears (Bob Dylan). | ||
| This ultrawide view from the top of Jacob's Ladder includes Salisbury Crags, demolition of the former New Street bus garage / carpark, new buildings on the New Street / East Market Street area, Waverley Station, North Bridge and part of the old Calton Jail on top of the cliff at the right. | ||
| A closer look at the demolition site featured in the previous picture. | ||

Soon to be demolished, this is the entrance to the old bus garage / carpark. |
