A familiar view to motorists avoiding North Bridge when travelling south from Leith Street towards the Royal Mile. The main rail line to the east and south passes overhead. See also the picture at the bottom of page 4.

New Street Carpark 00 1280 x 960 232K |
This and the next picture only added to this page later for comparison. This site is now occupied by a shiny new building with lawns on its roof. See New Street 64 on page 9. The viewpoint of this earlier picture would be inside the the current building shown on page 9. Waverley Carpark is shown here on the other (east) side of New Street. |

This entrance is the same as the one in the previous photo, but facing the opposite direction. As mentioned above, both of these brick buildings have been replaced by the one shown in New Street 64. |

Facing west from the same place is this view of Waverley Station with the Balmoral Hotel visible behind the shell of the old GPO building. Regent Road runs along the edge of the cliff at the right.

This is the view from further west along Calton Road.

Zoomed in for a closer look at the geometry of stone and metal that is the preserved shell of the old Waterloo Place General Post Office. The stone stump with the weeds on top used to be a support for a pedestrian bridge that closed decades previously.

This pedestrian bridge is still in use and provides access to Waverley Station from Calton Road.
| Looking under Regents Bridge towards Leith Street where a radio controlled Stop / Go sign has been installed whilst construction work goes on. A lone figure in a suit stands nearby, possibly phoning for a taxi. | ||

A few seconds later and the person in the suit stands attentively awaiting the outcome of the phone conversation. No doubt some form of transport arrived soon, enabling the curt instruction on the adjacent sign to be followed.

Another peek into the shell of the old GPO building.

The old pedestrian footbridge across Leith Street has been replaced by this curvaceous construction. Beyond, on Calton Hill, can be seen the City Observatory.

Straight - it isn't. Our new bendy bridge looks sufficiently solid so as not to flop about pathetically like a certain other notorious bridge further south.
![]() |
It's now May 2004 and the footbridge is open to the public. It's still all shiny and new, and hopefully it'll stay that way.
![]() |
The house across the way, where the previous bridge ended, will be more private now. The new bridge descends to the Greenside car park via steps or a lift. Consequently there's no longer a direct link from the St James Centre to Calton Hill.

A closer look at the curved, welded tubular steel framework.

The old bridge had dirty perspex sides but this one is open to the elements above the side glass panels. Ideal for taking photos of the view. The camera is pointed north down to Leith Docks and Inchkeith Island in the Firth of Forth. The new glass buildings at Greenside contrast with the stone tenements and refurbished chimneys.

A tighter composition showing the bridge's stairway entrance. May 2004.

Four years later in 2008 and there's still construction work going on behind the blue fence on Calton Hill (the steep cobbled street down from Waterloo Place to the Leith Street - Calton Road junction, not the actual hill).
![]() |
Down below, Calton Road branches off to the left from Leith Street. At the top of the hill the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel marks the east end of Princes Street. The bendy bridge leads to the St James Centre. |
