Geometric juxtaposition is the theme here. The footbridge
from Waverley Station emerges onto Calton Road near to the Venue. The orange
metalwork props up the shell of the former General Post Office building. |

Photographed from the circular balcony at the top of the Nelson Monument
on Calton Hill. The green dome is at the north east corner of the City Observatory.
The presence of the mobile chip shop spoils the view, but there will be
those glad of a hot snack. Down below is London Road and the start of the
A1. Round the corner is Elm Row, Gayfield Place and Annandale Street. |

The main cross-shaped building of the City Observatory as seen from above.
Streets visible below are from left to right York Place, Broughton Street,
Picardy Place, Union Place and Union Street. |

The new building down in Leith Street contrasts with the old building
overlooking it. At the other side of the street is the St James Shopping
Centre, an ugly concrete monstrosity partially ameliorated by the stone
cladding on the John Lewis shop. |

A woman in a suit runs out of the main entrance to Old Saint Andrew's
House, perhaps a civil servant late for a lunch appointment. |

Erected in honour of Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson. For £2 (2 UK
pounds) you can pass through the turnstile and climb the steps to look at
the stunning views. It's a shorter and wider climb than the Scott Monument
in Princes Street. |

This old gate is at the junction of the road called Calton Hill and Waterloo
Place. The old stone walls and faded wooden door contrast nicely with the
canopy of green leaves. |

Calton page 4 showed the Calton Road entrance to the old Post Office building
from street level. This is how it looks from the Regents Bridge on Waterloo
Place. It's lunchtime and the demolition workers are having a break. |

A wide-angle view from the same location shows Waverley Station, a glimpse
of Jeffrey Street at the top left corner, and one of the bridge's ornamental
stone pillars. There are views of the bridge itself on preceding pages in
this section. |
