Looking rather like an artist's impression rendered by a computer is this 2003 view of Greenside. Calton Hill is on the right.

The bridge carries Waterloo Place over Calton Road. White and blue Portacabins are lurking below while work goes on stripping the inside of the former GPO a few yards to the south.

This is the former entrance to the General Post Office's sorting office. Large red vans used to congregate here while sacks of parcels traveled overhead hanging from conveyors. Waverley Station is yards away on the same level.

Looking into the building this picture shows the final stages of demolition of the entire inside. Only the shell remains, ready for a luxury hotel complex with a roof garden.

The driver of the DEM-MASTER is demolishing this remaining corner of the building's interior. The rear wall faces North Bridge and the Balmoral Hotel.

Part of a pedestrian walkway connecting the north-east corner of Waverley Station to Calton Road. There's some graffiti on the stone parapets. Above and to the right is a large banner for the Scottish Socialist Party, draped across the building which houses the Venue.

A closer look at the artistically accomplished graffiti. It seems to have been done using stencils. This type of effort is becoming quite prevalent in the city. I prefer it to the pathetic schemie scrawls which adorn other neighbourhoods.

The green painted wrought iron of the walkway contrasts with the orange painted metalwork supporting the shell of the old GPO building.
New
Street |
Further west on Calton Road is the bottom of New Street which leads up to the Canongate section of the Royal Mile. Great things are afoot hereabouts - but meantime the old bus garage is a car park and it also accomodates this Café&Bar. The text (in the dog's speech bubble) describes the various delights awaiting the clientele. In a bizarre role-reversal the dog's naked 'master' is marking his territory. |
