Bruntsfield and Beyond

Buckstone, Clinton, Comiston, Craiglockhart

Buckstone
1024 x 768
153K
Buckstone housing development / project / scheme. It nestles / lurks to the south of Buckstone Snab and is thus deprived of good TV reception from the Craigkelly transmitter. This is a fairly up-market area where you can enjoy the sounds of the 'burbs, e.g. blackbirds and rotating electrical machinery.
Church Hill Theatre
1152 x 864
208K
Red sandstone, red-painted doors and gold lettering. This local theatre is in Morningside Road just up the hill from the Holy Corner junction. More information from Capinfo.
Clinton Road
1024 x 768
221K
This was originally the main road and tramway before Strathearn Place was opened up to connect with Greenhill Gardens and Church Hill.
Comiston Road
1024 x 768
182K
The A702 main road as it climbs south from Morningside to Fairmilehead and the Pentland Hills.

Another view, this time from further uphill just before the junction with Braid Hills Road.
Crags / Blackford

Salisbury Crags and the west side of Blackford Hill as photographed from the Braid Hills.

This pond is close by Craiglockhart Sports Centre in an area known as Happy Valley. There's a thin film of ice on the water's surface, this winter morning.
Happy Valley Graffiti 00
1152 x 864
365K

Rather more artistic than most graffiti, these three images currently adorn the east wall of Craiglockhart Tennis and Sports Centre. The sunshine is filtered by the trees on the steep western slopes of East Craiglockhart Hill.

Happy Valley Graffiti 01
1152 x 864
326K
The sunlight is brighter here and shows the bright colours on the rough surface. This and the previous picture are well-executed, straightforward portraits of men with green, white and brown faces.
Happy Valley Graffiti 02
1152 x 864
348K
This image has a cartoon-like background vaguely reminiscent of Robert Crumb's city scenes. Surreal perspective text appears to hover over the buildings, while two shifty-looking characters glare at each other. Natural green vegetation complements the reds and blues, not forgetting the sky which is 'kinda yellow' to quote the Traveling Wilburys.
Happy Valley Graffiti 04
1152 x 864

This one photographed September 2008. IMHO better art than much of the weird shit you often encounter in the expensive, hallowed halls of fashionable institutions...

Photographed December 2008.

Looks like a space ship has landed at Craiglockhart Campus. Photograph taken from the top of Easter Craiglockhart Hill.

Craiglockhart Hill East
2008 x

1280 x 805
321K

A frosty December morning at the top of Easter Craiglockhart Hill. The Pentland Hills are in the distance beyond the mist lingering along the Edinburgh bypass road. Wester Craiglockhart Hill lies to the south at the other side of Glenlockhart Road, visible at the right of the picture.
Craiglockhart Hilltop Seat 05

The metal seat at the top of the hill is visible in Google Earth. Here's a close-up showing some frost-decorated detail.

This second shot shows how the frost crystals are larger in the shade.
Craiglockhart View 10
1280 x 846
194K
Looking over the frosty bushes and trees towards Murrayfield Rugby Stadium. The sun is shining here and indeed down below on Gorgie but beyond Westfield Road the fog bank has enveloped Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Craiglockhart View 11
1280 x 845
333K
A different view with Polwarth Parish Church catching the sunshine in the mid-distance on the right.
Craiglockhart View 12
1280 x 854
219K
Looking north with Murrayfield stadium on the left and Tyncastle Stadium (Heart of Midlothian FC) on the right. The chimney at the centre belongs to the Caledonian brewery at Slateford.
Craiglockhart View 13
1280 x 854

There's more detail in this zoomed-in picture. The shiny cylinders are at the north side of Wheatfield Place. Somewhere near here, heroin is legally manufactured.
Happy Valley
Tufted Duck

1280 x 943
172K
Three pictures of tufted ducks, less frequent visitors than the more common mallards at Craiglockhart Pond.
Diving Duck
1280 x 820
142K
Only the rear end is visible here as the duck dives down for some pond weed.
Tufted Duck 3
1280 x 858
124K
In this profile shot, the duck's tuft is more visible. Notice how the tail feathers sit on the water's surface without breaking the surface tension.
Meggetland
& Forth

1152 x 864
218K
Not long ago, Meggetland was a green space at the north side of the Union canal. In this picture it appears as a brown space, soon to be covered in tarmac and houses. In the distance a bank of fog sits on top of the Firth of Forth. The hills of Fife lie beyond.
Craighouse
1280 x 857
283K
Photographed from my roof through a x10 zoom lens is this picture of Napier University's Craighouse Campus. The Pentland Hills at Bonaly are nearly 4km beyond but the long lens makes them seem much closer.
Snab View
Buckstone Snab View
1280 x 854
88.8K
A long lens view over Craighouse Campus and Corstorphine Hill to the Firth of Forth. Part of the road and rail bridges can be seen in the evening haze. A plane is descending towards Edinburgh Airport.
