Looking up at the south end of North Bridge. The Carlton Hotel towers overhead. The Scotsman Hotel faces it across the road. Down below East Market Street an advertising hoarding exhorts travelers to 'hang out with Homer' on Sky TV.

From further away with a longer focal length. An Edinburgh Vintage Bus carries visitors over North Bridge. Through the arch can be seen a fluttering Saltire and part of the castle.

The third shot in this group is photographed from higher up on East Market Street. This is likely to be more obvious when the image is viewed full size.

This close leads up from Jeffrey Street to the High Street just below the Tron crossroads.

Photographed back in the 1970s. The Carlton Hotel is left of the bridge's south end, and the Scotsman Building is at the other side. Down below, in Market Street, newsprint is being delivered.

Nearly 30 years later than the previous picture - the Scotsman Building is now a hotel. Men are working on the glass roof of the Waverley Station.
North Bridge and
Balmoral Hotel

Photographed from East Market Street. North Bridge carries a double-decker bus from the east end of Princes Street over the top of Waverley Station towards the Royal Mile and South Bridge. The Balmoral Hotel was formerly known as the North British Hotel.

Another early photograph. Classic Victorian architecture. Edinburgh's Chambers Street Museum still looks much like this in 2003.

(I like the new building too.)

Another view taken about 30 years later from the ground floor at the opposite end of the hall. Fisheye lens on Pentax *ist digital camera.

In the 1970s, the museum was somewhere free and warm to sit in, to read the paper or fall asleep. I particularly like the cylindrical radiator around the pillar.
Museum Roof WA

A wide-angle view of the roof area. The Tower Restaurant is through the door at the end. A sign points to the lift to the Roof Terrace which gives panoramic views of the Edinburgh skyline.

...to the roof terrace of the National Museum. This is one of several spiral staircases.
