Photographed from Easter Craiglockhart Hill at the western end of what is now Napier University and was formerly the Thomas Clouston Clinic. The field is at the east side of Myreside Road. Behind it, partly hidden by trees, is the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. The photos weren't planned like this - but I thought the comparison was quite interesting.

Not long ago, Meggetland was a green space at the north side of the Union canal. In this picture it appears as a brown space, soon to be covered in tarmac and houses. In the distance a bank of fog sits on top of the Firth of Forth. The hills of Fife lie beyond.

This is a large image and a large file. The blue building was the DIY firm Texas. Something unpleasant is being built on the green space that was once part of Meggetland.

Colinton Road is in the middle distance. Lockharton Avenue and Crescent are the two streets in the foreground, at the north side of Craiglockhart Pond. Photograph taken from Easter Craiglockhart Hill.

Photographed from Easter Craiglockhart Hill. At the bottom of the picture the path from Swanston Village leads up through the trees and past the 'T Woods'. The artificial ski slope is on the left. Three hillwalkers can be seen beside the cairn at the top of the hill.

Looking over the frosty bushes and trees towards Murrayfield Rugby Stadium. The sun is shining here and indeed down below on Gorgie but beyond Westfield Road the fog bank has enveloped Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.

There's more detail in this zoomed-in picture. The shiny cylinders are at the north side of Wheatfield Place. Somewhere near here, heroin is legally manufactured.

Now a university campus, this former psychiatric hospital has several fine buildings with magnificent views over the city. A foggy February morning adds a little atmosphere.

A wider view of the scene above. Beyond Wester Craiglockhart Hill to the south, the Pentlands rise out of the mist, still with a little snow here and there. Glenlockhart Road runs east-west in the misty valley below.

To start or finish a walk up Easter Craiglockhart Hill there's a convenient bus terminus for the 23 or 41 services at this spot. This is a view from the top deck of the bus. A walk up here can be extended by following the footpaths down the other side of the hill. A shorter middle route down some steps and a zigzag path takes you to Craighouse Road. The longer, more circuitous route goes along a high ridge and down, curving to the right behind Craiglockhart Tennis Centre and the pond at Happy Valley. Colinton Road and the Union Canal are a short distance from here.

The end of July 2010 brought Edinburgh sunny intervals and scattered showers which gave interesting changes of light - which I tried to capture just after 8pm.

I made no changes to the light balance in this or the next shot. Knowing that our vision tries to compensate for ambient light, I decided that the camera knew best and didn't change the colour when editing.
