The bottom of Viewforth at Fountainbridge. I'd like to think the old brick buildings will be preserved. The yellow sign points the way to Springside.

An announcement was made about a new 'road' connecting Haymarket to Fountainbridge. It transpired it was a path and a pedestrian crossing over the West Approach Road to Morrison Crescent. This is the start beside Fountainbridge facing north.

This is the view east from the same point as above. Grove Street is behind the 'bam' sign. Obviously nobody told them that 'bam' is a Scottish derogatory term short for bampot, an undesirable crazy person.

A few paces into Springside, looking back at Fountainbridge. An establishment here called Fingertips Sauna was flooded when the nearby Union Canal had a burst bank.
![]() |
A little tiled road winds in and out of the pedestrian way. Cars are obstructed by potted plants and additionally by temporary fencing.
![]() |
Facing north again, looking along the tiled road towards Morrison Crescent (just south of the Morrison Street carpark). Behind the blue fence is vacant land stretching 200m to Fountainpark centre.

Another look back towards Fountainbridge, showing the fencing across the little road which, in its pristine state, looks like an immaculate CGI rendering.

Almost at the West Approach Road. They've called this part McEwan Square after the brewery which used to be on this land. Usher breweries gave us the Usher Hall - any parallels here, I wonder...

Upper Grove Place lies beyond the blue barriers. Its status as a quiet cul-de-sac has been compromised by new developments. At the other end is Grove Street where there are yet more changes.
![]() |
Looking down a few steps to the crossing over the West Approach Road. There's a zigzag ramp for wheelchairs etc. Across the road are Morrison Crescent and Morrison Circus.
![]() |
An overall view from the steps.
![]() |
From further down, a wide angle view showing the intriguing top storey of this building standing right next to the West Approach Road.
![]() |
The crossing and a view of the circular housing block called Morrison Circus.

Springside

There is no footpath along the West Approach Road. You must cross, get on a bus - or go back. The wavy roof on the left is Fountainpark. The older tenements on the right are the back of Caledonian Crescent. |

Heading back towards Fountainbridge I snapped this table and stools in a yet-to-be used children's play area.
![]() |
Next to the fenced off play area was this maze-like bench. The table is a hexagon; this is a pentagon. Significance? Probably none.
![]() |
Another look at 'bam' on the way out to Fountainbridge.
![]() |
Newcomers who live here might be known as bampots by some aggrieved locals in nearby Brandfield Street.
![]() |
A final look before the short walk back up Gilmore Park to Leamington and Bruntsfield. Prior to the new path it was necessary to detour via Grove Street to Morrison Street if heading to Haymarket. The Telfer Subway is another alternative route to Dalry Road.

Previously photographed from the other end (Gorgie, Dalry, Haymarket page 2) but this is the Springside end, hence the grey tiles and shiny metal things in the foreground. |
