I've wandered down this way often but this is the first time I saw the bridge raised to allow the passage of a canal barge. Behind, the old McEwan's Brewery still stands between here and Fountainbridge.

Caution - Bridge Opening warns the sign on the chain. Pedestrian access across the canal is still available for those in a hurry. It's been some time since cars were able to cross here.

Looking to the left a little reveals the sloping street Gilmore Park which leads down to Fountainbridge. The trees in front of the boarded-up windows have their autumn foliage.
![]() |
Facing west shows the bollards for stopping motorists creating a rat-run down Leamington Terrace and the short one-way Leamington Road from the traffic lights at Gilmore Place.

Here is the RE-UNION canal boat sailing smoothly under the raised bridge.

This barge is available for hire. The web address is painted on the side.

A long lens shot shows the new canal-side houses for sale. The stone tenements behind are at St Peter's Place, part of Viewforth.

A lived-in houseboat moored at Lochrin Basin where there's services available, e.g. an electricity supply.

The bicycle at the bow will be very useful for quick travel along the canal towpath.

A look back along to the bridge. Further away, the stone bridge at Viewforth shows the way to Falkirk and beyond.

There's a Bob Dylan song called Dignity, something there's maybe less of nowadays, generally. The boat by the same name looks quite dignified beside the graffiti adorned garages in Lower Gilmore Place,

From further away, a final look (meantime) at the scene.

Previously photographed but the January sunshine made the twin arches really stand out, encouraging me to snap its picture again.

This lane is off Semple Street and once provided back door access to Woolworth's store at the top of Lothian Road. The L shaped shop also had an entrance in Fountainbridge.
![]() |
Metal doors and shutters protect the premises which now belong to Poundsavers. Woolworth's became like a filling station's shop without the petrol - then it went into liquidation.

The "Stunning Townhouses" described in the sign appear to be almost ready for occupation. The ice on the canal hasn't yet fully melted in January 2010, creating interesting patterns and reflections.
![]() |
Leamington Lift Bridge crosses the frozen canal here. People were walking on the ice recently but refrozen slush and snow made it a poor surface for skating. The thaw is now making the ice disappear.
![]() |
Water is filling parallel grooves on the surface, probably made by a sledge's runners in what was once snow.
![]() |
At the very end of the Union Canal. These boats aren't going anywhere yet, not until the ice melts.
![]() |
Four days later and the ice has melted a bit more. A cyclist heads west into the setting sun. The bridge ahead is Viewforth.

The next 7 pictures also appear on this page. BT smokers' corner ashtray is less than 3m from entrance!

Something is Coming Soon, that much is evident. Perhaps crossing the road and putting on reading glasses would have made it all perfectly clear... |

This part of Fountainbridge is rather run-down in parts. The brewery's gone and an air of uncertainty hangs over some areas. This is Gilmore Park which leads up to Leamington Lift Bridge and Bruntsfield. |

A leaky drainpipe provides nourishment for vegetation. The 'Wasted' posters' purpose is unclear. They may refer to a state of mind, or they might just be Wasted space. |

Near the new Springside housing project at the bottom of Viewforth is this portakabin office for students seeking accomodation. It's the same company as in Grove Street. |

An ultrawide fisheye view of Fountainpark. We saw Avatar in 3D there. |

Photographed on March 2nd 2010 from the canal bridge at Viewforth. Thanks to @lynnbmackartist, @cassandra2020, @herbchapman34, @chdot, @rachelfleming and others on Twitter it's been confirmed this is a cormorant. More common birds on the canal are swans, ducks, coots and moorhens.

This short street from Fountainbridge up to the Leamington Lift Bridge has deteriorated since the brewery went.

Further up the street looking back down. To my surprise I saw a security guard in the little office on the corner. |
