The Laughing Cavalier still grins from the top of the old brewery building, but not for much longer.

Photographed from the bridge over the Union Canal at Viewforth. A Lowland Canals van is parked beside recent fire damage to this corner of the old brewery.
The driver returns to his van. On the south bank are new jetties and canal-side homes, still being constructed. The grey inverted U shape of the Leamington Lift Bridge is beyond.

Stencilled graffiti on a concrete block placed in front of an old private car park. Note to adolescent males who clumsily scrawl slogans such as "oe, yeah, sine, nsa" on walls: You're pathetic if that's the best you can do to make your mark on the world. Banksy and others are cool; you are just children trying to annoy grown-ups.

Looking west along the canal bank towards the Leamington bridge. Some services are available to boats parked here - metered electricity presumably...

In contrast to the hand-crafted look of the previous boat, this one looks like it's been rendered by a computer.

Rapidly becoming a fashionable part of the city. There must always be an interesting view from these flats with the comings and goings of boats, cyclists and walkers - as well as vistas across the city rooftops.

New development 200m away from the end of the canal at the corner of Fountainbridge (on the left) and Semple Street (on the right).
Previously when walking from Morrison Street to Fountainbridge Marco's gym blocked the view of the brick-built Rosemount Buildings.
Most vacated land in Edinburgh seems to have houses constructed on it rather quickly in recent times (2008). Meantime, behind the pile of rubble, there's a new view of Rosemount Buildings. See this page for more Grove Street.

A new bank building is apparently going to be built on this land - subsidised by taxpayers' money after the 2008 global financial crisis. The Union Canal is hidden just behind the wooden fence. The remaining brewery buildings are just out of sight to the right.

Cranes tower into the sky as they transport building materials across the site. Until recently there was a green space here. A quote from a resident of nearby Upper Grove Place: Once upon a time I could look outside my bedroom window and view a small beautiful green park lined somewhat with trees. Now I can 'enjoy' one huge building site. At the time the plans were presented I had no time to attend any of the street community meetings, but my partner did attend two local Council meetings but found them too chaotic and vexed to make any sense, she walked out of one of the meetings after 40 minutes! It did seem the plans (according to one of my neighbours below) and the developers newsletter showed a park largely unaffected and in my wishful thinking I hoped this would be the case. Sadly, we were all duped, there is nothing left of the park. All gone. :-(

I knelt down to compose the shot and a swan obligingly swam across to check me out, creating ripples in the reflection of the new building.

The revitalised Union Canal continues to thrive. This is one end; the Falkirk Wheel is at the other connecting to the Forth and Clyde Canal (the first one to span an entire country).
