Edinburgh
Academy 1280 x 854 205K |
Henderson Row is at the other end of Clarence Street from St Stephen's Street and is home to Edinburgh Academy, a private school. |

Before 800 x 600 120K |
I only took this photo of St Stephen's Place for personal nostalgic reasons but it looked a bit grotty so I've removed the yellow lines and the bags of rubbish using the clone tool in Photoshop. |

After 800 x 600 117K |
I used Adobe Image Ready to combine both versions into an animated .gif but it's 664K in size even when optimised with only 128 colours. Some of my boyhood chums and I used to play 'tig' here after a session at the Heart of Midlothian Amateur Swimming Club on Monday evenings in the '50s. |

Mr

Edinburgh boasts several shops selling antique lamps both electric and oil. Mr Purves specialises in oil lamps at the shop in Saint Stephen Street. |

St
Stephen's Church 2 1152 x 864 169K |
If you come from Princes Street towards Stockbridge you'll likely travel down Frederick Street, Queen Street Gardens West and Howe Street - and the imposing building of St Stephen's Church will dominate the view. This is the stonework just to the left of the front door, photographed in June 2005. |

St
Stephen's Church 5 1152 x 864 247K |
This is the side view of the stone scrolls in the previous picture. The sunlight highlights the details of the cinquefoil stone roses. |

St
Stephen's Street 2 1152 x 864 264K |
Further west along St Stephen's Street they're having their market on a June Saturday morning. Music comes from a band playing in The Antiquary as locals and visitors search for bargains. |

St
Stephen's Place 2 782 x 1024 199K |
A sunnier, more detailed picture of the stone archway featured earlier on this page. Carved into the stone is 'Stockbridge market - butcher meat, fruits, fish & poultry' (my punctuation). This lane leads northwest from Saint Stephen's Street into Hamilton Place beside the Water of Leith (the river from the Pentland Hills to Leith). |

St
Stephen's Street 5 768 x 1024 242K |
From the corner of St Stephen's Street and North West Circus Place is this view back towards the market. With The Antiquary at one end, and The Bailie (pictured here) at the other, there's no shortage of cosy places in which to slake your thirst or have something to eat. St Stephen's Street has for many years had a sort of Bohemian atmosphere, the sort of place where artists and intellectuals might hang out. |

Stockbridge
4 950 x 1024 357K |
If you're walking on this stretch of the Water of Leith footpath then it's necessary to cross Deanhaugh street at the bridge. The steel stairs descend to the path once more which continues to Arboretum Avenue, Glenogle Road and Canonmills. |

St Stephen's Street 6 591 x 1024 192K |
Basements and sub-basements add to the the fascinating nature of this street. |

St Stephen's Street 9 1280 x 940 289K |
Dance for All at The Theatre School states the sign beside the front door. This view shows the side of the building and the basement. |

St Stephen's 6 1280 x 850 222K |
Three more views at St Stephen's Church, an impressive looking building as you descend from George Street and Queen Street. |

St Stephen's 7 703 x 1024 169K |
There have been some changes to the east of the church including a pedestrianised area behing the traffic bollards. |

St Stephen's 8 1280 x 848 278K |
This view shows the cobbled lane Cumberland Street North West Lane on the right and the unnamed 'street' behind the pillars. As of November 2009 none of my maps show the street name. |

Saint Bernard's Well 783 x 1080 210K |
Returning to the Water of Leith to show the statue at Saint Bernard's Well. This picture and the next six also feature in the main (long) Water of Leith page. |

Saunders Street Steps 1280 x 850 479K |
This picture should probably more accurately be named The Dene as the sign on the next picture names it thus. This is the view you would see when walking downstream from Dean Village. |

The Dene 1280 x 850 336K |
The same two arches as in the picture above but large and small - instead of small and large. This is at the end of Saunders Street facing upriver. |

Gormley 00 1280 x 735 294K |
About 200m along Saunders Street is the main road from the city centre; this section is Deanhaugh Street and it crosses the river here where you can see this Gormley statue. BBC info here |

Gormley 01 1280 x 850 367K |
Zoomed in closer to better see the texture of rusting iron. |

StockBridge 08 1280 x 850 518K |
I had to go behind these railings to take the Gormley photos. Summer vegetation may have blocked some views from the bridge. |

This shows the footpath from Deanhaugh Street bridge to Bridge Place and Glenogle Road. |

Bridge Place 1280 x 850 378K |
If you follow the path above having descended the metal steps then crossing Bridge Place continues the Water of Leith path downriver. |

Glenogle Baths 1280 x 943 339K |
Recently renovated in 2010. In the '50s I was a member of the Heart of Midlothian Swimming Club and, thanks to coaching by my father, was Juvenile Champion 4 years running. I remember unruly youths jumping off the balcony into the water in public sessions. I also remember giant cockroaches in the cubicals and worse... But things are better now! |
