This shows the GPS trace of the path under the A720 and north to the 16 bus terminus beside the tennis courts at Westgarth Avenue. Picture from Google via Samsung Galaxy Tab. The easiest transition to civilisation after a long walk. (Zoom out and drag the map.) |

![]() |
The main path that the cyclist is on leads to Balerno. The right fork leads up to the north west slopes of Black Hill. This path is very narrow and steep for a while before it levels out and curves clockwise around Black Hill. Eventually it joins Glen Road at the western tip of Glencorse Reservoir after passing Bell's Hill on the left. Click to see GPS track. |

![]() |
Harlaw Google Earth 02 1228 x 726 221K |
If coming clockwise round the north west side of Blackhill this is the flattest route to Maidens Cleugh or Bonaly. Other routes include crossing Dens Cleugh (muddy) then over Bells Hill (very steep) and Harbour Hill (very steep at other side) or continuing clockwise back to Glen Road. |

Update 18th Jan 2012: I've downloaded firmware update P7510XXKL2 and installed it. The reboot took so long I thought I'd better connect the power supply. Not many striking innovations but at least the damn thing now seems to respond to my touches and doesn't ignore me for many seconds any more. It's not Ice Cream Sandwich but it seems reasonably cool so far, nonetheless...
Update 21st Jan 2012: For a day or two everything was fast and responsive. Today it became slow and clunky again even after forcing a reset or two. The Screen needs repeated attempts - and touches (and non-existent) touches seem to be stored in a buffer and acted on minutes later - if at all. Luckily my Kindle has a keyboard and I was able to do a text search to find my place in my book which I'd been reading on the Galaxy Tab recently.

The first thing they did after closing the road was to make this big pile of rubble on the road. The same material is being used to widen the railway embankment.

I was sent to a two storey stone house in a street called Sheephousehill in the West Lothian village of Fauldhouse. When the door opened, a cigarette smoking woman appeared wearing an apron from which she pulled a packet of cigarettes, offering me one. There were chickens on the stairs leading up to the bedrooms and she shooed them outside before showing me the TV in the livingroom then returning to the kitchen. The neon bulbs behind each channel selector touch-button would light up but the TV was stuck on one channel.

Early May 2011. We decided to walk up Carnethy starting from Kirk Road beside the A702 road not far from Silverburn. We'd seen the signpost on a previous visit. The following images are more or less in sequence although taken with 3 different cameras.
![]() |
The south east slopes of Carnethy are quite steep and there are no obvious paths. A red quad bike is on the skyline, presumably a farmer checking on lambs and ewes.
![]() |
The path leads up towards Fala Knowe, a low hill near the A702 main road.
![]() |
The red quad bike continues on its way down the hill.

At the top of the path seen in Carnethy path 7 above is this helpful sign pointing back towards Kirk Road. Beyond this point the paths are little more than sheep trails.
![]() |
Looking back towards the sign and the stile in the previous picture.
![]() |
Carnethy slopes up to the left. We hoped to find a path leading up the saddle between it and Turnhouse Hill...
![]() |
A little further on we came to this faint crossroads of two paths and decided to turn left up the steeper path because we thought we saw a better path higher up.
![]() |
Looking south towards the A702. The wooded area is the valley of the North Esk, beyond which is Auchencorth Moss which was threatened with a wind farm which would have ruined a view made famous by Sir Walter Scott.
![]() |
Higher up on Carnethy's slopes there are only traces of paths and it's hard work avoiding the heather and the scree. The path on Turnhouse Hill's south west slope comes into view.

![]() |
Looking back down. The path along the ridge is eroded by walkers' boots and new paths form as it gets increasingly difficult to avoid slipping on loose stones. Also, rainwater often follows established paths and walkers avoid the water and mud, creating parallel paths.

As you can see, the Booster Blades shown above [on the page] have a similar skating technique. There's nothing (much) new under the sun. |
