The Canny Man

Unsolicited comments from ed.general on Usenet:

A few years ago they kicked out a terminally ill cancer patient for being in a wheelchair.

That pub used to be notorious for only allowing 'regulars' in. I don't know if it has changed hands since then but the spirit seems to remain.

They had to clean it up a bit a few years ago. Probably a fire hazard.

Three of us were turned away one day on the basis of "no large groups allowed".

My Dad was once told to leave, as he was dressed in 'working clothes'......

Myself and some friends were asked to leave as one of them had spikey hair !!! Not even asked to leave nicely - just asked to goto to the door and told to 'get out'. I live round the corner and won't go back.

Nice pub, but there's a combination lock on the toilet, for God's sake. My girlfriend was once told off by the owner, for "leaning on another chair". She had a bad back and was trying to keep her spine straight.

They are a shower of elitist tossers and have been for many, many years.

We used to go there every single Thursday night, without fail, for a period of about eight years, ending about 9 or 10 years ago. It was always a good night.

However, I was back in Edinburgh in January and I took a prospective client there for lunch. After being reluctantly "accepted" and having the procedure rudely explained to us, we were served a tawdry, tasteless and vastly overpriced meal in a room which stank rather like their unventilated toilets. (And it was cold, too.)

They can hang as may antique prams from the ceiling and keys on the wall as they like ("Look, We're really mad, posh and eccentric!") - these were features that I used to like. But nothing will ever make up for the embarrassment, bad service and bad attitude that I had to endure that afternoon.
