An attractive glass-fronted notice board at the junction of Jawbone Walk and Coronation Walk welcomes visitors and provides relevant information. A day or two later and the scene is misty.

As seen from Salisbury Crags. The districts of Marchmont and Warrender are on the left. Bruntsfield is behind with the links in the centre, behind tree-lined Melville Drive which crosses The Meadows. The box-shaped building at the right is the University Library at George Square.
Boys Brigade Walk

November sunshine picks out the detail. This area was once a loch which drained into a burn which flowed down near where Lothian Road is today. This avenue leads from Melville Drive (near Livingstone Place) to the junction of Middle Meadow Walk, Jawbone Walk and North Meadow Walk.

In this picture North Meadow Walk runs along the right hand side. The camera is facing west, looking through the trees across The Meadows towards Melville Drive near Tollcross. Middle Meadow Walk continues up the hill at the right.
Middle Meadow Walk

This view is directly down the centre of the path from the north side of The Meadows towards Argyle Place. It's December and the trees are bare, allowing the oblique sunshine to filter through.

Bruntsfield
Path

1152 x 864

From the bottom end of Marchmont Road, this unnamed path climbs Bruntsfield Links running parallel to Warrender Park Terrace. It then crosses Whitehouse Loan and cuts across to Bruntsfield Place. Update 2008: It's called Leamington Walk.

Facing the opposite direction on a different day. The cylist is approaching the foot of Marchmont Road where it meets Melville Drive.

Further east, where tennis courts hide in the mist behind the hedge on the left of the picture. The outline of Salisbury Crags is visible near the centre of the picture.
Approaching Whitehouse Loan on the footpath leading from Bruntsfield Place. The building behind the trees is the University of Edinburgh Residence at Warrender Park Crescent.
Melville Drive 05
1152 x 864
312K
Continue on this tree-lined footpath down here from Whitehouse Loan and you'll come to this busy pedestrian junction at Melville Drive. To the left is the pedestrian crossing to Jawbone Walk. The cyclists' crossing is exactly 200 metres further east, but many lazy, antisocial cyclists just ignore the markings and become a nuisance and a danger to pedestrians.
A sunny, slightly hazy morning makes for a pleasant walk to work down Bruntsfield Links to Melville Drive. The distinctive silhouette of Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat provides a backdrop.

Photographed at the end of April 2004 when the Cherry Blossom trees were in flower. The rooves and turrets at the back of North Meadow Walk belong to the since relocated ERI - see Quartermile 03 below...

It's a January morning and the trees are bare. The sun shines on the new buildings being erected at Quartermile's old Royal Infirmary site. Jawbone walk connects Melville Drive to North Meadow Walk at its junction with Middle Meadow Walk.

Quartermile 03
1152 x 864

The organisation called Quartermile have literally ring-fenced the grounds of the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary whilst it's being redeveloped. Their blue fences encircle the entire area and often look bizarre like this beside North Meadow Walk.
Merchiston

Portrays some intriguing architecture from a bygone era. A much larger building of similar style was stupidly demolished years ago.

Merchiston Pavements

It's a shame that these inspired/artistic/stoned efforts have been covered in a layer of tarmac, but at least there's now a record of these cautionary footpath markings created on the street where Robin Cook MP lived. This is a collage of 12. Each one is infinitely superior to some of the so-called 'art' which appears in our galleries.
Merchiston Park

The view up from Granville Terrace to Merchiston Place. It's mid March so this road has not yet become a leafy lane. Click here to see how it looks from the top of Christ Church steeple at Holy corner.
Falko Van

FALKO KONDITORMEISTER proclaims the lettering on this retro vehicle. Their local Bruntsfield establishment isn't far away - go left round the corner from Merchiston Park into Merchiston Place then across Bruntsfield Place.

Cows still graze here in autumn 2000. Behind the trees to the left is the Hermitage of Braid. Down the slope to the right are allotments where those citizens without gardens of their own can raise vegetables or flowers.
