Bruntsfield & Beyond
Boroughmuirhead area, Braid

At the corner of Montpelier Park and Merchiston Place is Boroughmuirhead Post Office. This has been relocated to smaller, less grand premises nearer Viewforth. The premises here are now a restaurant in August 2011.

It's not just the name of the Post Office; this used to be an ancient forest where royalty went hunting.

The east side where it curves left to Holy Corner.

On the right hand side of the Boroughmuirhead Post Office pictured above is the street called Montpelier Park. Evidence suggests that the foot traffic into this Boroughmuir School Annexe is via the leftmost steps. Nature is currently transforming these steps into a rock garden.

A closer look at what seems to be ivy spreading across the steps.

Not far away, many of the ground floor houses on the east side of the street have the appearance of formerly being small shops or commercial premises. This handpainted sign seems to be indelibly marked into the red sandstone. It would be difficult to 'excell' the advertised whiskies at 3/- (15p) and 3/6 (17.5p). You can sometimes get single malt for £20 (20 UKP) here in Bruntsfield in August 2011.

I liked the grey paint job, slightly contrasted by the tiled floot and neat shiny windows. The only text is the stylish number 42 which is, of course, the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Pictured in Gilmore Place are 3 shops: World Without Hunger Organization, Glamour - and a bakery called Dough Re Mi. The Smart car bears an ad which may not be smart for people assuming all their taxis are this size. (See Capital Cabs from Electric Soup comic here.)

This place was closed and empty when I passed. This could be a new business starting up. Obviously, I liked their sign on the artist's easel.

Apparently shaped like a letter T, this clump of trees is actually in the shape of a cross. To the left is the artificial ski slope at Hillend. On the right is Caerketton Hill with its scree slopes. Comiston Road (A702) is visible in the foreground. Photographed from Buckstone Snab at the west of the Braid Hills. (Hundreds of Pentlands photos here.)

Braid Hill is in the middle distance, covered in yellow gorse bushes. Braid Hills Road runs left-right between the houses. Bonaly is in the distance on the right. Photographed from Blackford Hill. |

The Braid Hills golf course, behind which rises Caerketton Hill and the Pentland Hills.

A view north west towards Craiglockhart Hill on the left, and Corstorphine Hill on the right. Both Forth bridges are visible in the centre distance. The Ochil Hills are in the background. Ben Ledi is just visible to the left. A plane is coming in from the east to land at Edinburgh Airport.

Buckstone Snab (208m) was the vantage point for this photo looking from the Braid Hills north towards Fife and the Firth of Forth. |
